The
Even Start Family Literacy Program is a
federal grant program serving families
of children age birth to grade 3. This
free educational program is for
low-income families and is designed to
raise academic achievement among the
children as well as the literacy ability
of their parents. The goal of the
program is to break the cycle of poverty
and illiteracy.
ESN operates an Even Start Program in
Joliet in partnership with Joliet Junior
College, Joliet Public School District
86, and Joliet Public Library. The
program is certified by Parents As
Teachers (PAT), an international early
childhood and family support program.
All parent educators are PAT trained and
certified.
In order to receive Even Start
services, families must
- live in Joliet School District 86,
- have a child age birth to 7,
- meet low-income guidelines, and
- have a parent or caregiver with
low-level literacy
The program provides very intensive
services for the entire family,
including the following components:
home-based instruction, ESL classes, early childhood
education, and family literacy
activities. Families must be willing to
participate in all four components of
the program.
